Stonehenge has fascinated archaeologists and philosophers for centuries. Who built it? What was it's purpose? What ceremonies may have been performed there?
There are certain elements in Stonehenge which stand out: the twelve pillars in a circle, the orientation of the central altar, the solar alignment. The twelve stones are taken to represent the lunar cycle. The position of the sun when in alignment with the altar signals one of the most significant festival seasons known to mankind - Summer Solstice. It was a time of celebration, a time of feasts, the longest day of the year.
Of course, many of these elements are also present in the Native American Medicine Wheel and show a strong relationship to each other. Cultures considered primitive were aware of the seasonal changes and recognized these as significant events throughout the year.
