- The changer; mineral totem is petrified wood changed from wood to stone over time
    
 - Numerous legends of coyote
    
- Many have element whereby Coyote changes something or himself/herself
 
     - A creator, great teacher, a trickster-teacher
    
 - Brings creative nature of Great Spirit, teaching of nature
    
 - Find inspiration and new creative ideas or concepts
 
3.4.1.2 Stone Medicine:  Petrified Wood (Wilson VFEM 16-17)
- Comes from trees buried in mud, sand, or volcanic ash ages ago
    
- Have transformed to stone
        
 - Action caused by water seeping through mud and sand into the buried logs
        
 - Water filling empty cells of decaying wood with mineral matter
        
 - Until whole structure becomes solid stone (crystallizes)
        
 - Stone shows every detail of original wood, even under microscope
        
 - Minerals mostly of chalcedony and agate, two forms of silica
 
      - Petrified Wood people have medicine powers to bring change within an individual or group
     
- Are the trickster-teachers, the Coyote People in our midst
