3.7 Raven - "Spokesperson" or "Wisest of All"

3.7.1 Raven Messenger Associations
3.7.1.1 Raven - Spokesperson for the Great Spirit (Wilson MW 107-108)
- "The wisest of all the birds, the first to know all about the land"
    
 - Two-leggeds touched are ministers, priests, priestesses, shamans
    
- Medicine men and women, holy men and women, the spiritual leaders
    
 - Raven sent by Noah first, later sent a dove
    
 - Raven brought food to Elijah
 
 
3.7.1.2 Stone Medicine:  Jasper  (Wilson VFEM 14-15)
- A form of quartz, brown, reddish brown, black, blue, yellow and green
    
- Treasured as amulet, especially if heart-shaped
        
 - Tiger-eye is a form of jasper, found in red, blue, and yellow (usual) forms
 
     - Gives heat of sun, can cause water to boil
    
 - Believed to possess power to stop bleeding, make owner invisible, ensure safe and long life
    
- Draw poison from snake bite, restore lost eyesight, bring rain if placed in water
        
 - Has power over bad spirits
 
     - Bloodstone (variety of green/red jasper) once used by physicians to stop bleeding
    
- Used pulverized with egg white and honey
 
     - All forms bring blessing to owner
    
- Allows owner to cast spells over others; all forms attract earth energy
 
     - When placed, in morning sun, in water, it is said to have beneficial effects
 
3.7.1.3 Color:  Violet/Golden-White Light
3.7.1.4 Animal Totem:  Raven (Wilson VFEM 34-35)
- Wisest of all birds; first to know all about the land
    
 - Build large nests on ledges or in the tops of trees; five to seven eggs in nest
    
 - Some tribes see raven as mouthpiece or spokesperson for the Great Spirit
    
- Other tribes see raven as trickster
 
     - Some tribes view raven as a good omen, in others it is bad
    
 - Some tribes believe raven brings rain, others believe raven holds back the rain
    
 - Many legends as why raven is black (originally white)
    
- Punished for wrongdoing
        
 - Put out fire to save people;
        
 - Captured fire from sun, etc...
 
     - Raven people have the medicine power of the prophet
    
- Who declare the message of the Great Spirit or God
        
 - Very ecologically minded and can trick you  into learning things you may have been reticent to look into
        
 - The state of balance determines how far they can soar
        
- State of balance more crucial to raven people than any other totem
 
         - Are comfortable in both realms of earth and sky
        
- Can see any view point, both good and bad
            
 - Are intelligent people, able to see many views
 
         - Are group oriented and are very loyal to any cooperative group
        
- Are territorial and will defend their own groups; loyal
