4.11.1.1 Color:  Orange (Bruce-Mitford 106)
- Like red, symbolic of flames, but also of luxury and splendor
 - In China and Japan, equated with love and happiness
 - Saffron robes worn by Buddhist monks and young initiates
- Indicate they have taken vows of humility and renunciation
 
 
4.11.1.2 Medicine Stone:  Copper and Malachite (Wilson VFEM 15)
- Malachite is a copper carbonate, from luster to dull and silky; a gemstone
- Carved into vases, ornaments, statues; has spiritual powers
    
 - Raises sensitivity to voice of spirit
    
- Increases receptivity, increases psychic powers
 
 
 - Malachite people have the ability to bring change to anything in which they are involved
- Can adapt situations into whatever shape they desire
    
 - Have high energy most of the time
    
 - Have new ideas about how situations can be improved, and most are sound

 - Copper crystals found at Bisbee and Globe, Arizona; also at Georetown, New Mexico
 
 
4.11.1.3 Animal Totem:  Snake (Wilson VFEM 37)
- Some tribes and many ancient cultures worldwide see snake as a healer
- Symbol of Hippocratic oath utilized by medical doctors as their symbol
    
 - A limbless reptile with expandable jaws
    
 - Has many vertebrae and its ribs are loosely attached allowing it to loop itself
    
 - A large row of belly scales allows it to scoot along
    
 - It is carnivorous; it hibernates in winter; sheds skin
    
 - Its meals may exceed 50% of its body weight
 
 - Snake people find it very easy to move from one religion to another
- Or school of philosophy, without suffering any traumatic effects whatsoever
    
 - Are great healers - physically, spiritually, and sociologically
    
 - Tend to be secretive, mysterious and adaptable people
    
 - Are useful for maintaining a balance in nature

4.11.1.4 Plant Totem:  Thistle (Wilson VFEM 47)
- Can grow 3-10' high; has thick taproot resembling a carrot
- Leaves grow in a rosette during first year
    
 - Thick succulent flowering stem grows in second year
    
 - Flowers red, purple, or white
    
 - Leaves and flowers have very sharp prickly hairs
 
 - Medicine powers:  young stem and root may be peeled and eaten raw or cooked
- Young leaves may be made into a tea
    
 - Fruitlike seeds may be eaten raw or toasted
    
 - All parts of thistle are rich in minerals
    
 - In Native American medicine used for weak stomachs, digestive problems,
    
- For reducing fevers, expelling worms, increasing milk in nursing mothers
        
 - And as an all purpose herb for most maladies
 
     - It strengthens internal organs, and cures aches and pains
 
 - Thistle people grow to small or great height spiritually, mentally, emotionally
- Depending on their own willingness to develop their talents
    
 - They have a strong deep root in the earth; they are ecologically minded
    
 - They can be very helpful to all of the world around them
    
 - If one can get past their outer coating
